Received PMI in the mail yesterday and have devoured it. It's one of the be=
st issues in my memory.

I saw (and lusted after) David Scott Smith's work in a recent issue of CM o=
r at least I think it was CM. In the current PMI, he discusses how he makes=
his wonderful pieces and in another section, gives his recipe for transluc=
ent porcelain slip and it's cone 6. YEA!!!! OK, I'll calm down now. So my q=
uestion is - if I use the recipe and don't add the darvan, should I have a =
workable clay. I'm thinking of working with slabs and not throwing for a st=
art.

Thanks

Hi Shula,

Depends on how much soluble soda is present - is there Neph Sy or frit?

You may have to add some epsom salts to counter any natural deflocculators.

Send me the recipe and I'll have a look.

I'd love to know the answer to this as well. If the results could be pos=
=3D
ted
to the list, that would be great.

Thanks!

Hi Marian,

I think it is feasible in this case - the recipe is for porcelain.

Adding bentonite and maybe some epsom salts to keep the clay
flocculated and leaving out the Darvan (deflocculator) should do the
trick.

Some slips may not work depending on the plastic to non plastic ratio
of the materials - many on this list would be able to discern which
would work.
