plaster additives?

I've made a latex cast by painting latex on a sculpture I made out of
clay and am having fun turning out white plaster replicas which we're
painting with acrylic. Anyway, the question I have is what do people
know about adding additives to plaster to color it or change the
texture. I tried just putting acrylic paint into the plaster and it
worked but took quit a bit of paint. Is there a cheaper way to color
plaster. I was also wondering about adding red clay slip to the plaster
but haven't tried this yet. What can you add to plaster for variety?
Thanks

Try your local mason supply house. . Ask them if they have plaster colors .
Plastering contractors use them all the time. If they do not have plaster
colors try cement pigments--they should work. Be sure to dry blend completely
any color you use. Jim Horvitz Rancho Mirage Ca

Greg, I often add RIT dye to plaster to give it color. You can also stir in
vermiculite for interesting texture effect. It also renders the plaster
easier to carve.

Hi- I've added small ammounts of red iron oxide or ochre to plaster and it
colors beautifully.

I forgot to mention, mix the RIT dye with the water before mixing the
plaster.

One other thing, now that I have your attention. If you want to slow the
setting time for the plaster, add a little sodate retarder. This can be
purchased at your local masonry supplier, or perhaps at the cement plant.
Just follow the instructions on the bag/container.

Greg:
Just a thought, but try food dyes or mason stains for colour.
How about varing grits of sand or small stones for texture.
Pet stores sell small coloured sand/stones for fish tanks. Why not?
Sounds like fun. Enjoy. Regards,
Marc

Regarding carvable plaster I found a recipe I use with kids so they can
carve the plaster in a sculpture project.

1 part sand
2 parts plaster
3 parts vermiculite
