Dear Guangzhen Zhou,

The following is an extract from "Silverwork and Jewellery" (p351-2) by H.
Wilson, first published in great Britain in 1902. A second edition was
published in 1972 and had the following ISBN codes. UK 0-273-01100-6. US
0-8008-7192

"Clays for mould and core - Special kinds of clay mixture will be required.
The first is kami tuchi, or paper clay. This is made of fine casting
sand,Japanese paper and ordinary potter's clay

The paper used must be such as has long fibre. Newspaper, or indeed any
wood-pulp paper, is useless......Mix the sand with the clay then add the
Japanese paper, well soaked. Knead the mixture well with the hands until al=
l
the materials are so thoroughly incorporated that, on pulling a piece of th=
e
clay apart, the separated surfaces appear as if covered with a very fine
down or mould

Test the piece after firing. If, after it has been baked to redness it shoul=
d
crack in the furnace, there was too much clay. If the paper is in excess it
will be too brittle."

The concept of using paper as a reinforcement for clay objects has a long
history.

Best regards with your writing,

Sincerely,

This is not unlike the method described by the
Renaissance sculptor Cennini in his book, in
which he describes using fiber from rotted rags
to reinforce clay for metal- casting investment.

Dear Snail Scott,

I would not be surprised if the idea of incorporating fibrous material in
clay did not originate much earlier in societies that were metal founders.
Did you see the report about the recent Roman Bronze Mask unearthed in
Cumbria? Looked to me like a fine example of "Shell Casting"
