joining an arts guild

updated wed 22 sep 10

Should I be concerned that the guild had a membership of 40 last year and
now has 20? I don't know if that is just artists, or artists/community
supporters/etc. This guild has been around for 4-5 years, so I know there
are growing pains involved.

Keba - go to arrowsmithpottersguild.bc.ca

We are a Guild on Vancouver Island. We have our own building, studio =3D
and gallery. We have monthly meetings which are well attended. We have =
=3D
our own special sales and also participate in many others on the Island.

We are considered a teaching and learning entity in our community - =3D
Oceanside - help many including our local food bank. We run regular =3D
series of pottery lessons and also convene many good workshops. We have =
=3D
had several very well know potters come to teach us their secrets of =3D
potting, e.g. Tony Clennell (coming next April), Hank Murrow, Paul =3D
Davis, Robert Barron Cathi Jefferson, etc.

You will find if and when you join a Guild, it is not only what you get =3D
out of it, it is probably, mainly, what you put into it.

Looking for some feedback - there are three arts guilds in my area and I'm
wondering about the benefits to joining any of them. I've been to meetings
at one, and plan on going to the next meeting of the other two.

From what I can see (website information), none of them has a
gallery/storefront to show members' work. They all have (or are involved
in) an arts festival each year. And they have monthly meetings.

For those who have been or are members of arts guilds: What would be the
benefits of joining an art guild? What should I be looking for from the
guild and what should I expect to give to the guild?

Thanks!

I've been thinking we need something like a guild. I heard about a
week ago, that Shirley Johnson passed away earlier in the summer.
All I could find on the web was a 2 line obituary.

Artist Statement
"I make pots for use - bowls for soup or cereal, cups for tea or wine
- all meant as much for the hand as for the eye. I am interested in
the way a pot, hand held, seen close up, reveals itself: the rhythms
of its making, the character of clay and glazes, the marks of fire as
well as those subtle modulations of form that give a pot both its
emotional content and its fitness for use."

It is $35/year, the second is $15, and I don't know what the third costs
(not on their website and I haven't been to the meeting yet). I was
surprised to see the $20 difference in price, but maybe they charge what th=
e
(artist) market will bear?

Very sage counsel, Les;

And the members at Arrowsmith put a LOT of energy into their Guild. I =3D
went up last Fall to present a workshop, and found it packed to the =3D
rafters with attendees. Lots of help unloading and setting up my pots in =
=3D
the gallery, lots of help with the tools and the setup for the workshop, =
=3D
including two wheels so I could move smoothly from throwing to trimming, =
=3D
etc. I had forgotten a small adaptor cable for the digital projector, =3D
and someone managed to find one on very short notice while I tried to =3D
keep a crowd of fifty entertained. they seemed to enjoy the slides of =3D
Japan even though it started late. And the hospitality of local member =3D
Jane Murray-Smith was wonderful indeed. Sushi was great in town at both =3D
places we tried, and I was sad to leave the folks there...... except =3D
that Ian gave me a tour of the Tozan Kiln down-island on my way to the =3D
ferry.=3D20

I hope everyone who bought my tools and my pots are getting good use =3D
from both!

Cheers, Hank=3D

Hi Keba -=3D20

Back again .... our Arrowsmith Potters Guild annual fees are $75.00 and =3D
we also charge $75.00 for any of the members that want to use all the =3D
studio equipment. Not bad ...
$1.50 per week. It is difficult to stock your own studio at that price.=3D=
20=3D

Also, membership goes up and down each year ... we have had years with =3D
90 members but an average would be approx. 55 members.

Les.
