geil kiln donation

Hello All -=3D20

I am seeking advice regarding a kiln offered to our non-profit studio as =
=3D
a donation. The kiln is an older (from the 80's?) 12 cubic foot Geil =3D
fiber kiln. We were informed the fiber walls contain asbestos. The =3D
current owner has agreed to remove and properly dispose of the walls. =3D
He suggests the fiber is still fine. I am suspect. I believe the fiber =
=3D
would be stripped if I request.=3D20

We are 40 Resident Artists operating in a shared space by volunteer =3D
power. We contract with some of our members to teach classes open to the =
=3D
public. This is not a matter of not having enough kilns. Our artists =3D
have access to (an ancient yet working well) Alipine kiln, a nicely =3D
built new downdraft soda kiln, and three electric kilns. The cleaning =
=3D
and rebuilding of this Geil kiln would need to be either a "pet" =3D
project, or a class project. We have space for the kiln, and this area =3D
has access to the gas line used to fire our soda kiln; but this space =3D
would require us to create another pad.=3D20

Is the frame, pyrometer, and burners (with pilot light), worth the =3D
effort to store, clean, rebuild, and hook-up this kiln? We would incur =
=3D
a $90.00 delivery fee.

I appreciate your input.

I wouldn't think the fiber contained asbestos, but if concerned call Paul
Geil at Geil Kilns: (800) 887-4345

From the 80's it seems really unlikely that the kiln would contain asbestos=
.
Seems like that material was being phased out before then.

If you have doubts, I took a brief glance at the two versions of this kiln
offered by Geil. One fiberlined, one IFB lined. The dimensions are very
close, within an inch. If you are really concerned, you could have the
fiber stripped and re-do the interior with IFB.

As others have suggested, you could contact Geil and see if they ever used
asbestos. I am thinking they did not.

Easiest of all would be to leave the fiber in, spray with the appropriate
ITC product and start firing.
