There was a question captioned about lifting the lid on a white hot =3D
kiln.
The responses were like 96% resounding "NO's", 3% qualified answers =3D
urging great caution,
and diverse protective measures, and 1% the usual and customary =3D
pronouncements about
spreading info not fear, fear being dangerous, and the like.

One of the biggest dangers to all in dangerous activities is throwing =3D
caution/fear to the wind.
This is EXACTLY were the pros, the ones who have done it all their lives =
=3D
meet disaster.

A professional logger felled a big tree. Some of the branches bent =3D
and were
caught under the trunk as the tree fell. The logger was "fearless", =3D
walked along the=3D20
log, cut off a bent branch. Which whipped up, blinded him, and=3D20
took out part of his cheek.

A former logger (who already had had a few narrow escapes) had piled =3D
logs to=3D20
be cut into firewood lengths. The logs had frozen together. He=3D20
was going to cut through the bunch, like cutting through a plateful of=3D20
cooked asparagus. His son said: "Dad, don't do that. Those logs were =3D
not=3D20
piled well enough to do that." Dad said: "Don't YOU tell ME what to =3D
do...I=3D20
was in the woods years before you were out of diapers....blah, =3D
blah,blah."=3D20
Wife, who had brought hot coffee said: "X is right. Those logs..."=3D20
Dad yelled: " Now what the heck do you know...?" Powered up saw, took =3D
first=3D20
cut, log rolled, kicked saw back, hit Dad at base of neck, just missed=3D20
whatever that artery is. Had son not been there to give first first aid =
=3D

(volunteer fireman) and wife there to drive pickup to ER....another =3D
funeral.

Never mind that the PTO is still running...It is quicker to jump over =3D
it than to walk around the
tractor to get to other side! Right! There goes another leg! "I am =3D
pretty sure Harry
threw that breaker" --and another electrocution! The local papers cover =
=3D
up
the cause of many an "accidental" death out of pity for the family--but =3D
the grapevine
tells a very clear tale....Someone had listened to all the blather about =
=3D
ignoring fear,
being brave etc...right to the morticians. =3D20

And every year some "fearless" skier ignores the signs, ignores the =3D
warnings--and
leaves a bloody dent in a large tree, or on a large rock.

There are enough terrors in life that must be faced, bravely, head on.
Taking meaningless risks is not among them . That is suicidal and =3D
foolish.

Sincerely
Chicken Little

Chicken little is fearful of raku. But would need a change of
pants with hikidashi (pulling out saturated iron glazed pots at the
top temp of a kiln.

I am guessing that glass blowing simple causes a stroke.

I didn't see a single person say you should open a hot kiln
without caution. But there are a great number who have never done
these things and are simply sharing their fear because of their
personal lack of experience.

But that is how fear mongers always work, based on
ignorance. They cannot base decisions upon rational facts. It
constantly comes up in relationship to salt, soda or raku firing or
copper in glazes.
