Lee, Oh My!!! when someone posts a serious question and depends on a consid=
ered answer that involves her safety let someone like ''Grandpaw Bill" spea=
k.

Given that sometime ago you first tried to bully, insult, and drive our "ne=
wbies" away from Clayart and then subsequently declared Clayart dead; I thi=
nk any post from you should be viewed as suspect and ill considered.

It has been very refreshing to see fewer posts from you recently and I actu=
ally read a couple that seemed to indicate that you were taking time to thi=
nk. Now be good and go try some abstract expression or spend some quality=
time with a loved one.

Sharonia best wishes to you, listen to Bill and keep your eye lids and fac=
e in useable condition. Err on the side of safety. It never hurts!

Short story: we were doing a cone 9 "raku", local hand dug and processed n=
ative clay, iron saturated glaze, firing in a front loading 16 cu ft gas fu=
eled kiln. Ryoji was protective suited from head and face mask to toes... =
except that the heavy leather apron left the toes of his "tenny" shoes peek=
ing out. He waited with tongs in hand as I swung the door open.(I was behi=
nd the door using the door as a shield) With a poof his shoes caught fire a=
nd he was dancing in flames as we enveloped his lower extremities in fire e=
xtinguisher spray and quickly removed his smoking shoes. No harm to flesh=
because of quick action.

Be safe ya'll, as many including chicken little have said!!!
Lee sit down, shut up until you have something considered to say. And don'=
t imagine that your mostly vicarious experiences make you an authority on a=
nything or gives you license to belittle or ridicule anyone.

David Woof....asking: does living on the Rez for three years, or in Mashiko=
for three years, make one either an Indian or a Masiko potter? How does t=
hat work??? If I had spent some time in Tijuana with mi amiga Merrie Wanna=
, what would that make mi, pour favor???? High and broke and feeling stupid=
, or a Mexican potter in Clarkdale, Arizona??? What a conundrum this morni=
ng. Think I better go spend some quality time.......doing something of obse=
rvable value.

No, it's not ok!

Oh, you want a reason...

1. You'll burn yourself.
2. The sudden rush of cooler air may crack the pots.
3. You'll burn yourself.
4. The sudden rush of cooler air may damage the kiln furniture.
5. You'll burn yourself.
6. You'll shoot your eye out - oh wait, that's the BB gun question...

If you have a set of cones in front of lower spy hole you can see and a set
up top you can't and just look at them to compare to the other set after th=
e
firing, you're probably fine.

Bill

Chicken little is fearful of raku. But would need a change of
pants with hikidashi (pulling out saturated iron glazed pots at the
top temp of a kiln.

I am guessing that glass blowing simple causes a stroke.

I didn't see a single person say you should open a hot kiln
without caution. But there are a great number who have never done
these things and are simply sharing their fear because of their
personal lack of experience.

But that is how fear mongers always work, based on
ignorance. They cannot base decisions upon rational facts. It
constantly comes up in relationship to salt, soda or raku firing or
copper in glazes.
