Refire Randy's red (or several other saturated iron reds) at cone 06
(no higher) and it will come out redder. Fun fun.
As many of you probably know, refire any iron red that has come out
brown and it will get redder. I'm not sure why Candice recommends
against going above cone 06. You can refire in a bisque or just do
it again in the next glaze firing. And indeed this glaze does FUN
things refired. I got a crazy deep burgundy on one piece. (Oh yes,
^6 electric for those who missed the beginning.)
But getting back to firing in the first place. When iron reds come
out brown it is often because the initial firing was cooled too
quickly. These red colors develop in the 700-900C temperature
range, which is why refiring in bisque helps out. So if you slow
down the initial firing and/or cooling, you'll get the iron colors
in the first firing instead of the second. See Hamer or one of the
ceramic science texts for explanations.
