Hello All;
Question #1
I Inherited a smaller Skutt kiln (2.5" wall) and trying a few firings
with old glazes to cone 8 with slow cool down cycle. The glaze density
is 1.5.
This is a tin white glaze and it should be good at cone 7 but
"perfect' at cone 8 with a slow cool down ramp (80 deg C from 1080
down to 888)
At any rate, I did the same ramp in this new-to-me kiln. The finished
cone is 9 with the tip kissing the shelf. The surface is mildly orange
peeled and not the usual glossy surface.
To recap: same glaze, slightly thicker application, different kiln
(2.5" wall and 2/3 the size of my old kiln), same firing ramp, final
temperature is cone 9 rather than cone 8. Can you advise if I should
refire to get a smooth surface?
Question #2
For my first firing just to see how the new-to-me kiln behaves, I fire
a basic transparent load setting to cone fire at cone 6 FAST. I
finished the firing in 6 hours. Cone 6 tip on the shelf and the glaze
is done (not as good as a slower ramp, naturally) Does this mean that
this kiln is on course?
Thanks

Hi May,
First, as for refiring an overfired pot to smooth the glaze - lots of glaze=
s
variables that affect the outcome, but I have never been successful with
refiring over-fired pieces.
Sounds like the kiln is dead on to me. Since you do not know the life or
history of the kiln, I'd keep a replacement thermocouple handy. If you star=
t
seeing the cones changing, it is the first thing to change out.
Congrats on the "new to you" Kiln.
