Hello Clayarters-

Olivia T. Cavy received promotional material for "The Crafts Report",
The Business Journal for the Crafts Industry, addressed to "Dear Crafts
Artist". Now Olivia has in the past subscribed to several cooking
magazines and several compact disk clubs, and may have answered a
questionnaire indicating that she was interested in crafts, but she does
not do clay. (The subscription card, in fact, asks if the subscriberto
check the appropriate box: glass, ceramics, fiber, wood, jewelry,
leather, teacher, retailer, supplier or other.)

However the publication looks interesting, and I wonder if anyone has
seen previous issues of this magazine or knows anything about it? It
promises to discuss a wide variety of business issues of interest to
people who want to earn a living from their craft.

BTW their US toll free phone number to order is 1-800-777-7098 and their
mailing address is: The Crafts Report, PO Box 1992, Wilmington, DE
19899-1992. They are not offering a trial issue but a full year is 12
issues for $29 and they offer that if you cancel your subscription they
will refund the cost of all unmailed issues.

I have been a subscriber to The Crafts Report for over 15 years. The
publication is constantly evolving and adapting to new markets. You should
be able to find a single issue on most larger newsstands in the "Hobby
Craft" section. Craft magazines are spread all over the newsstands now...
American Craft is in the "art section" AmericanStyle is found in the
Arch/Design section... and other publications are found in the hobby
section. The most recent issue of The Crafts Report focuses on "Craft
Collectors" the cover features Dorothy Sax hugging a 10 ft ceramic
sculpture.

If you're interested in the Business of Craft... order The Crafts Report!

Bonnie - I've subscribed to "The Crafts Report" for at least 10 years and
find it most helpful in marketing my work. Has lots of information
regarding the kind of business and marketing skills which is not a focus in
many fine arts degree programs. They do a good job and I've always been
satisfied. I've been making a living for 16 years in clay and think that
Crafts Resport has been instrumental in part. If they say they'll refund
your money if not satisfied, I'd believe them. Candace Young

Crafts Report has been around for a while and I have subscribed for a few
years. It has some articles of general interest for those of us who make a
living by the work of our hands but certainly not just pots. It seems more
and more to be catering to the interests of gallery owners and craft buyers
rather than the interests of the artists themselves. There are lots of
advertisements for shows around the country and a modest sized lists of
shows in the back of the magazine. I enjoy it to a degree and find that I
can get through it in a very short period of time (easy reading and lots I'm
not interested in) unlike other magazines I get that take all year to get
through (MS, Utne reader and the never ending stack of New Yorker
Magazines!) Check it out on a news stand, or the library before you subscribe.

I have been reading The Crafts Report for several years now. I like it and
feel like they have some interesting articles on the business aspects of
selling your work. Also the articles on how to photograph are helpful. I think
it is worthwhile. Michelle in sunny Colorado

Olivia, I have subscribed to the Crafts Report for about eight or nine
years now, it use to be in newspaper format until the last couple of years.
I think it has value in that it shows the business side of crafting. It
also has useful articles written on photography, taxes, and shows. If you
would like to see issues without commiting yourself to subscribing at this
time you can visit the web site at:
http://www.craftsreport.com This will give you an idea of what the
publication has to offer you. Then you can decide to subscribe.
Good reading! Liz from soggy South Carolina , where the pots thrown
yesterday are just as wet today!! :-(

Crafts Report is absolutely my favorite "business" magazine. They have
a wealth of wonderful articles about running a craft business, both from
the artist's point of view and from the gallery's, as well. Many of the
articles deal with issues we need to know about, but don't want to do
the research -- i.e., insurance, taxes, marketing, etc.

They often feature articles that deal with what the gallery owner looks
for -- very helpful, not only to use as a guide for production if you
wish, but also to walk a few steps in their shoes and understand their
side of the commission, delivery, reliability, quality issues. Each
month they feature one or two galleries looking for work, and they have
classified ads where galleries solicit submissions from artists.

Yes, they do articles on fabric, jewelry, wood, etc., crafts. But many
of those artists' problems and interests overlap with our own.

Obviously this is a publication I find useful, and, no, I'm not on their
payroll, either.

The Crafts Report is the only publication around that's entirely
devoted to the business of crafts. It has many good articles on
taxes, accounting, booth design, shows, photography, legal matters,
and on and on. It also has the most complete listing of show dates
and info of any regular publication you can find, as well as listings
of gslleries seeking work. Especially if you are starting in the
crafts business field, it is invaluable.

However "The Crafts Report" magazine looks interesting, and I wonder if anyone

________________________REPLY___________________________________
I have been subscribing to the Crafts Report for one year and like it very
much.
It is geared to two types of people:
1. A crafts artist who does a lot of shows and/or has work in a lot of crafts
shops.
2. Craft shop owners. They often call them "retailers" in the magazine.
About 60% is geared to retailers and 40% to artists.
I find it helpful because: my goal is to get work in shops. It is VERY helpful
to see things from "their" perspective.
Also, they list plus REVIEW shows, fairs, competitions.
Also, they profile actual shops all over the country, about 3 per issue, with
photos, preferred crafts, method of contact, price range, etc.

The magazine is very much about becoming more "professional." It emphasizes
high quality and efficiency more than art. It covers all crafts. It is
definitely not a "how-to" craft. It is rather "how-to" PROMOTE your work.

Dave & Liz-

Thanks for the suggestion to look at their web site
http://www.craftsreport.com. I did take a long look and read through a
number of representative articles, which have given me a better idea of
what the magazine is all about.

I also telephoned and spoke with someone at the magazine who was very
nice, explained to me about the magazine, and told me all the places in
Pennsylvania where The Crafts Report is sold. Unfortunately none of them
is in western PA!

Thanks to Candace, Barbara, Michelle, Berry, Paul & Wendy for your
comments to Clayart as well.

It looks like it would be worth trying it out! Everyone has made the
point that this is not a crafts "how-to" publication. It's about
selling/marketing/promoting all sorts of crafts with heavy emphasis on
retailers.

I really appreciate getting all the feed back so quickly!
