alpine kiln problem

Hi All,

My friend is using my Alpine kiln, a pretty old model, and we are having =
=3D
trouble with it shutting off.
The alpine kiln guy said that the thermocouple [wire] for the pilot =3D
light was broken, and we need to replace it.
We need someone to help us solve the problem. We are in Berkeley, Ca, =3D
is there a local person who can=3D20
give us some suggestions?

Thanks,

I have a manual for the HF series of updraft kilns. i use to fire these =
=3D
a
lot. if you need wiring diagrams, or the troubleshooting section,i could=3D=
20=3D

try to take a digital image of the page and email to you.

One thing i remember from these kilns was the 'fireye' system cold be
touchy. If there were any obstacles in the flame path or the target brick=
=3D

was dislodged, the pilot burner assembly's ultraviolet sensor could read
incorrectly and shut everything down . SO , i would first check to make s=
=3D
ure
there 's no garbage, loose brick ,etc, that might be interfering with wit=
=3D
h
the fireye. Also makesure the fireye lens is clean.
. Here's a possibly relevant paragraph from the manual:

The pilot flame detector on the burner assembly is an ultra violet sensor=
=3D

which 'sees' or watches the pilot flame. The gas flame gives off ultra
violet radiation which is picked up by the sensor. There are two sensors =
=3D
on
the kiln burner. each sensor is located immediately next to the pilot bur=
=3D
ner
on each side of the hearth and each sensor is wired into a separate contr=
=3D
ol
box mounted on the right side of the kiln burner. The control boxes pick =
=3D
up
the signal from the sensor and close the solenoid valve in the line on th=
=3D
e
event of pilot flame failure.

so it could be the sensor is misreading the flame , or it could be the
wiring at the sensor or in the control box or possibly the solenoid. that=
=3D
's
where i would look, or start anyway, though maybe the ALpine guy knew
exactly what was happening from your description. there are troubleshoot=
=3D
ing
procedures you can follow, but it really varies depending on exactly what=
=3D
is
happening, if either pilot is staying lit at all, etc.

good luck, wish i knew someone in nearby. let me know if pages from manua=
=3D
l
would help.
