salt firing book?

Is there a definitive book on salt firing?
I'm getting a new used kiln this weekend. Don't know a thing about it
other than it's a dead Paragon 3 ring electric.
My plan is to replace my current one (converted to propane cone 10) with
this new one, simply so I can go from updraft to downdraft (going on
Simon Leach's great video on converting an electric into a downdraft
propane kiln),.

That will leave me with this old updraft, and I was thinking it might be
fun to try some salt/soda firing in it.
I don't know anything ab out the process, except I love the results.
Thought a good book might help.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

If your old kiln is made of soft brick it will die a quick death the salt
fumes penetrate and break down the bricks from the inside out, even with a
good kiln wash.

Hi Cathi
I am embarking on a similar idea. I will be converting old electrics into ^=
6
soda kilns as an idea for those that want to fire soda without the
investment in a full scale kiln.

There are 2 books on soda firing I would reccomend, Soda firing by Ruthanne
Tudball and Soda Clay Fire by Gail Nichols.

I would not use salt in the traditional way if I was you. Throwing rock sal=
t
into a old electric would probably melt the bottom out of it real fast. I
plan to coat the interior of the old kilns with refractory coating and spra=
y
soda in at ^6.

I like the idea of Downdraft as opposed to an updraft. Do you have the link
for that Simon Leach video?

I believe Jack Troy wrote the first of the genre for ceramic artists and
studio potters.
Jack Troy, "Salt Glazed Ceramics" ISBN 0-273-01053-0. 1977 Watson Guptil
Publications.

It is always a good idea to do a literature search. There are many useful
articles to be found in the major magazines and journals.
Remember Salt Glazing was an industrial process so there is useful
information in some of the trade and professional journals going back to th=
e
early 1900's.

My favorite salt-glaze book is still the one Ivor mentioned - Jack Troy's
"Salt Glazed Ceramics." It's out of print, but you can find used copies.
The Rosemary Cochrane and Phil Rogers salt-glazing books are also very good=
.
