Kiln wash recipe
3 parts alumina hydrate
1 part EPK
(hope I got that right and didn't reverse the proportions)
anybody got a better one that they like?
much love

I use about a 2:1 ratio of alumina hydrate/epk it has not proven too
critical, so I do it by volume rather than worrying about weight.
alumina hydrate is expensive, so the less you can get away with the
better. try different ratios of this and see how they hold up both in
terms of the kiln wash staying on the shelf, and any glaze runs coming
off the shelf. this ratio works for me for most of the time, YMMV

50% alumina hydrate, 50% china clay
Can't say it's better, really.

Calcined Kaolin (EPK) 25%
EPK 25%
Alumina Hydrate 25%
Very little flaking with this one.

Sorry. That should have read
Calcined Kaolin 25% (I use calcined EPK)
EPK 25%
Alumina Hydrate 50%
I am probably going to be corrected by those more knowledgeable but
everything I have read puts the calcining process for kaolin in the
900 degree C to a max of 1100 degree C. That would be about ^010 to
^02. Since I bisque to ^04 I usually just put a bowl of EPK in the
bisque firing when I need to. I know that this isn't very scientific
of me but it works for me.
