Are there many of you potters working with an air filtration system in your
studios?
If you have such a system can you recommend it?

Hi Dale,

Although it is not a HEPA system I use a "Jet" Air Filtration Unit made for
woodworkers. I'd like to have a HEPA unit but I already own two of these
from my woodshop. I know it is not the best but it is better than nothing
until I can buy one of the serious filters.

Like most things in life, understanding risk and managing it is the most
important thing. When I'm mixing clay or glazes, I run the filtration unit
AND wear an approved mask with current filters. When I'm throwing or
hand-building, I just run the filtration unit. If I'm vacuuming the floor
with my CFM HEPA vac, the filtration unit is "on" and IF I've make a big
mess the mask is on too. The Filtration unit is hooked directly to my light=
s
- so if I'm in there, it's running - again, it's better than nothing.

I use a pair of washable filters on the entrance to the unit and it has a
bag filter on the inside. I wash the two filters each week, unless they
"look" dirty and they get washed sooner. The internal bag filter is changed
every two months - "even" months so I can keep track easy - I'm a simple
person.

It's so surprising how much junk these things collect. Even when the
washable filters "look" clean, lots of clay comes out in the sink.

Like I said better than nothing, replacement filters are much cheaper too -
BUT a set of lungs are NOT very cheap. Perspective.

Best wishes and happy potting,
Larry Kruzan
