bisque fired mouse turds

updated wed 8 dec 10

I made an arch form and removed the arch from my wood kiln this weekend. Wh=
en I have fired, I sometimes have had a mouse come out of the insulation on=
the arch to escape the heat. I always felt for the little dude, but there =
was nothing I could do.

Anyway- when removing the insulation I found the nest, which seemed to have=
bisque fired mouse turds in it. Did it eat clay, or was this stuff just bl=
eached out from the heat? I dunno, but thought it was interesting.

Wonders never cease!
I got a chuckle out of your post, and also because I just had to see the=

I wouldn't doubt that some clay ended up in his diet, even if accidentally,
though I guess whether the turds are fired clay or just overdried normal
droppings would require more investigation.

Incidentally, people have been known to eat clay --

-- so maybe he found some, thought it was a great digestive, and kept at it=
?

Nancy- that's some weird stuff that I didn't anticipate. I knew a woman wit=
h pica who had the urge to eat just about everything (she had limited commu=
nication ability, or I would have loved to ask her more about it), and have=
heard of people that out of the blue had to eat dirt when they smelled it.=
I'd guess that some of these urges are driven by mineral deficiencies (sup=
posedly people would eat match heads for certail deficiencies as well)

I've heard of southern folk medicine that involved eating clay- sometimes d=
uring pregnancy- which turned out to be quite dangerous. But hey- it's all =
natural :)
