extruder expansion box question

I don't think your clay is too soft. I have the same extruder and
expansion box and die, and it curls when it first comes out but I can
get a long straight extrusion after that. I did have a similar problem
with the large square die which was solved when I got a new die from
North Star. The old die was cut just a little bit too close to the bolt
holes and the new die was just maybe 1/8 inch more offset so the edge of
the square was just that much further away from the bolt holes. Mike
Morris is the guy to talk to at North Star if you think the problem is a
defective die.

You are using brand new, not recycled clay, and spraying WD40 inside the
extruder barrel?

Hi All, i recently received an expansion box for the north star
extruder. I put the die in for the tray pattern and loaded the
extruder with soft bmix cone 6 regular and then bmix with grog soft.
Every time I extruded the tray, it gripped the sides of the metal
bracket as it curled so I tried to guide it straight down but every
time"50 pounds of clay later" the trays with feet attached tore every
6 inches or so. Very annoying . is my clay too soft? any tips greatly
appreciated, Thanks, gina Mars

My guess is that the clay is too soft. BUT it really is a 50/50 guess. I
don't have your setup but I do a lot of extruding and a smooth claybody
needs to be a little stiffer than a groggy stoneware clay.
