digitizing slide negatives

Hi John & All,

My tech guru really likes these guys:

http://www.scancafe.com/

He's had them digitize tons of slides & prints.
He says they do a better job than he can do himself.
And he has ALL the hardware & software...

Look under services>pro options
for high end scanning.

Like everything, it's a question of
your time & ability, vs cost and final quality...

Best, DMH

I have had this done at Burne Photo Imaging Inc. in Madison, WI. It was =3D
recommended to me by a professional photographer, and I was happy with =3D
it. I don't remember the prices, but it was probably reasonable.

I have a collection of slides that need high quality digitizing. Does
anyone have any suggestion as to where I might get this done? Without
damaging the slides and hopefully not costing a fortune in the process.
These are museum quality slides and images and must be preserved at the
highest level. The new digitized images need to have the same quality.

Thanks,

John

"Museum quality?"

I think you'd better be more specific---resolution? color
restoration? dust removal? number of slides?

I did a search for "museum quality slide scanning" and got a bunch of hits.
I only went to this one, www.blue-soho.com
Take a look at it and you'll see why you might want to be a bit more
specific!!

As an aside (but apropos to the current web site thread) Blue-Soho's
site is about the most annoying I've come across in some time. That,
plus the thought of helping them pay for their fancy digs, made me
wanna up-chuck!

John -
Any decent-quality slide scanner can do the high-resolution scans you
require. They can be imported into Photoshop and saved as non-lossy TIFF
files. Check around and you should be able to find someone you know who ha=
s
one. Years ago I purchased a Minolta slide scanner back when Minolta was
still in existence. It does a great job even though it uses antiquated SCS=
I
connection technology. I suppose when I move beyond XP I will have to
abandon it.

Hi John,

If you decide to have it done professionally there is one thing you =3D
might watch out for. A fair number of the scanning firms send the slides =
=3D
off to India or China or wherever to be scanned. While they promise to =3D
return them, do you really want precious images leaving the country? =3D
They are not exactly forthright about explaining this feature of their =3D
service on their web sites. However, the ones that keep them in the =3D
country usually say so explicitly.

Regards,

John
