there should be no need to fire twice. Test the clear(s) for compatibility =

If I put a design using wax resist on an area on a eating surface is it
food safe or do I need to fire again with
a clear glaze?

Hi Verna
If you are firing a ^6 clay to maturity with a porosity of 1-2% then I thin=
k
food safe wise you would be O.K. That being said I would worry a bit about
the possibility of staining where you have no glaze not to mention your
knife may grind a bit there.
There are lots of functional high fire unglazed pots out there.

Verna:
You put the wax resist on to keep glaze from getting on the design you
protect with the wax.
When you bisque/fire, the wax burns off.
You will need a clear glaze on that to render the clay impermeable.
No, I did not say "food -safe".
All clay is food safe...the food will not harm it if it is properly fired.

Hi Verna,
Not all clays sold mature at the temperature they are recommended to.
Best to test the clay to see if it will not absorb water, oil and food.
A simple way is to fire some unglazed cylinders and leave water in
them over night - with paper under them. If the paper is wet or
wrinkled after 12 hours the clay needs to be fired higher.
You can also test for water absorbency - not hard to do - Knowing what
percent of water is absorbed will help you make decisions about how
functional the clay really is. Let me know if you want me to send
instructions on how to test for absorbency.
