nceca/clayart room/final story

updated wed 12 jan 11

at this time i am not planning a clayart room, or am
i planning on attending nceca.

negotiations went very poorly in tampa.
no one wanted to do business. they seem very
heavily booked. vacation cities are much different
to deal with than business cities.

things change. i have done the clayart room for
12 years in a row. i do that alone.
it was an idea to bring people together in real time, not cyber
time.
this was a huge risk on my part. as you know...it was my visa card
that held that room, and in fact all 1000 room nights.

things change. we got hit big time in philly. the hotel did
not keep proper records, and yet, it was their records that
created a hug bill. we paid it. some others stepped forward
and in the end, acers was able to help reimburse me from the
`clayart fund` that i had put in place. this was a many
thousand dollar bill. and caused me many sleepless nights.
i was ruled by anger at nasty hotel criminals.

with the help of a friend, i put $10,000 in the acers coffers
ten years ago,
as an insurance policy against liabilities that could occur
running clayart. and we have given away many
thousands of dollars to clayart friends in need.
if you think it is easy...well i would be
glad to borrow anyone else's credit card for the spring.

running an event of this size and scope has become very
mind boggling. it no longer is just `helping out`....it is a huge
liability. (as many of you remember, he had over a million
dollars in pots on display in the clayart room phoenix. that
causes undie spotting, big time. )

remember, a fact. most of the vendors are really pulling their
heads back at nceca. the costs are unreal. some of the
big vendors are cutting from four booths to one. who can
afford it at this economic time? and, i am not going to beg
vendors for a free space. not the way i do things. and, for
sure, none of them have extra money. for many, business is
down 25 percent.

so, if anyone else is ready to step forward, take on the liability,
be my guest.

i have no anger or angst against anyone in the clayart family.
we are still a solid group. in fact if anything....i appreciate
many of you more than ever. for example, i sent copies of all the
hotel crap and the bills to several great friends here on clayart.
i wanted to make sure that the facts are held by others. integrity
is everything...without it...we have fools running the store.

perhaps, with some more organization, and planning, we can
work towards seattle, and bring things back to the way
it was.
we will see who steps forward.

and support.

Hello Mel;

Just want to let you know that I went to Philly last year solely for
going to Clayart room and I have a delightful time. I met new
friends, hook up with old ones and learn more than a few things in
pottery, people and places.

Many thanks!

A public thank you for all the leg work and financial support you have
and will continue to give to our ClayArt, Mel Jacobson.

I can't make NCECA again this year and from the sound of things I may
not be missing as much as I might otherwise have. But, I also know
that often these things have a way of working themselves out. Let's
see what we shall see.

I have a few boards of moist pots, so things are good despite the rest.

Spin on Rams Head...

I talked to the onsite coordinator for the 2012 conference here in
Seattle last night about this. She said that NCECA has rooms
available for things like this. Instead of going through a hotel,
you'd go through NCECA itself and the room would be in the convention
center. She didn't say what that would cost, or who at NCECA to talk
to, but she did say that she was pretty sure there were at least two
rooms still available in Tampa. I plan on going, but I'm not the one
to take this on.

Mel,=3D20

I have to reiterate what other people have said. I sure appreciate what =3D
you have done for Clayart and the Clayart hotels and Clayart rooms. I =3D
feel privileged to have participated and to have gotten to know so many =3D
Clayart people. At this point I will probably not be going. I have lived =
=3D
in the area of Pinellas and Sarasota County since 1956 so it is not =3D
exciting to me. NCECA has been a way for me to see areas of the US that =3D
I have never been to or haven't been since I was a kid. I've seen more =3D
of Europe. I plan on going to Washington. Have seen more of Europe than =3D
the states. If anyone is going be sure to go to the Columbia Restaurant =3D
in Ybor City. One of my favorite restaurants, although I go to the one =3D
in St. Pete. Black bean soup, 1905 salad and Cuban bread to die for. I =3D
have not been to the Tampa Museum since it was rebuilt but it should be =3D
wonderful. I didn't look at the bus tour things. St. Pete Museum in St. =3D
Pete, across the bridge from Tampa, is one of my favorite Museums. St. =3D
Pete Clay Company/Highwater Clays is in St. Pete. Florida Craftsmen the =3D
state organization is in St. Pete. I have not been to the Convention =3D
Center for several years. When ACC added a show in the area the first =3D
few years they were at the Tampa Convention Center. Then they moved it =3D
to Sarasota. Two years ago they dropped the show and someone else took =3D
over. Sarasota has the Ringling Museum of Art and Ringling Art School. I =
=3D
got my Master's Degree in Art Education from University of South =3D
Florida, although all but one of the classes was from the Sarasota =3D
Campus. So enjoy the conference. I haven't decided if I might do a day =3D
pass but at this point probably not.
