Hi,=3D20
=3DA0
I will be moving and setting up a new studio this spring and buying a new w=
=3D
heel. I throw standing up and clockwise (Asian style wheel rotation) on an =
=3D
electric wheel. Now I throw on an ancient Dae Woong wheel. It sounds like a=
=3D
lawnmower and if I throw big pots it slows down when the clay goes over 30=
=3D
lbs.when centering,=3DA0even if its on full power.
=3DA0
I would love to hear experiences and reviews of Brent or Thomas Stuart/Skut=
=3D
t wheels.=3D20
=3DA0
I had been considering a Thomas Stuart/Skutt Revolution and a Brent C. Simi=
=3D
lar prices.
=3DA0
Thomas Stuart/Skutt=3DA0makes a big deal that=3DA0their engine is better/bi=
gger=3D
. Same horsepower but more torque. They also offer=3DA0(for an additional f=
ee=3D
)=3DA0a neat wheel "cuphead" and plaster mold making system to make your ow=
n =3D
plaster bats. That sounds very nice and cheaper in the long run than buying=
=3D
bats. The wheel head is removable and the splash pan is quite large and yo=
=3D
u just take off the wheel=3DA0head, take off the splash pan, and throw them=
i=3D
n the reclaim bucket! They have an additional (pay to upgrade) SSX foot pow=
=3D
er system that says it makes the foot pedal have great sensitivity/control.=
=3D
Claim to be quiet, but I've never heard one personally.
=3DA0
The Brent seems similar. Go figure!=3DA0Quiet, similar power, foot pedal.=
=3DA0T=3D
here is no bat system and the splash pan=3DA0seems like it isn't=3DA0even w=
orth=3D
it=3DA0so will build one=3DA0if I get it.
=3DA0
But the bat system and upgraded foot pedal SSX option on the Thomas Stuart =
=3D
costs about an additional $300 all=3DA0up.=3DA0If the original foot pedal o=
n th=3D
e Brent is just as good I could upgrade to a CXC or EX or just save my cash=
=3D
!
=3DA0
Brent's seem pretty popular. But Thomas Stuart seems to have a good name al=
=3D
so, although I don't seem to see as many.
=3DA0
Can anyone report on:
-their preference
-durability
-customer service
-ever needed a repair? That would be a real hassle to ship back a pottery w=
=3D
heel.
-Foot pedals- that will be a big deal. That will effect my throwing=3DA0on =
a =3D
daily basis
=3DA0
Thanks!

I have a Thomas Stuart Pro that I bought before they were acquired by
Skutt.It is or was their top o' the line. I love it! It is a strong
wheel and is a real solid work horse. You can't also get optional leg
extensions that allow you to stand up and throw. My only complaint is
that it is a little on the loud side but I think that they have cured
that with the SSX drive. I am not a big fan of Brent due to the pedal
but that is just my personal preference. You should also check out the
Shimpo VL Whisper. To me that is a very close runner with the TS.

Both wheels are excellent tools. I've used many Brents in school setting=
=3D
s and=3D20
presently own a TS Revolution.=3D20

I love the TS for many reasons. I like the large single piece removable =
=3D
splash=3D20
pan. I like being able to easily remove the wheel head which makes clean=
=3D
up=3D20
much easier. I know of no other wheel whose wheel head doesn't eventuall=
=3D
y=3D20
lock down onto the spindle over time.=3D20

It is as quiet as any wheel on the market except the Shimpo Whisper. An=
=3D
d it=3D20
is powerful enough to center 30+ lbs. without slowing down. I've had my =
=3D
TS=3D20
now for 3+ yrs with no problems. I don't use the bat system so can't adv=
=3D
ise=3D20
in that regard. I use the Creative Industry bats which I love.

When I bought my TS I also bought the SSX drive system and love the fact=3D=
20=3D

that the electronics for the footpedal are infinitely adjustable. This i=
=3D
s=3D20
something that Skutt does not advertise but should. However, the SSX has=
=3D
no=3D20
light on the switch to tell you when/if the wheel is on. A small detail =
=3D
but=3D20
occasionally I leave the wheel on overnight as a result.

When I first received the TS the wheel had jerky movements when turning. =
=3D
I=3D20
contacted their excellent tech support and was told how to adjust by remo=
=3D
ving=3D20
the plate on the electronic controls. Within the box are three adjustmen=
=3D
t=3D20
screws that, together, give the user infinite control over how you want t=
=3D
he=3D20
wheel to work. If you want more rpm at the high end or want the wheel to=
=3D
=3D20
turn very slow and smooth on the low end, etc. I have it now adjusted to=
=3D
suit=3D20
my way of working. You should ask Skutt tech for the specs on this=3D20
adjustment because they don't come with the wheel.

I also bought the shaft extender which allows you to raise the wheel head=
=3D
=3D20
above the splash pan for very large pieces like wide platters or for tool=
=3D
ing=3D20
large pieces on the Giffen Grip. Such an attachment is not possible with=
=3D
out=3D20
the ease of taking the wheel head on and off. Also bought the leg extend=
=3D
ers=3D20
since I now throw standing up and they are easier to adjust than the leg=3D=
20=3D

extenders on my Pacifica.

If I had it to do over, I would buy a TS again.
