Do you have your wheel against the wheel and you stand in front of it?
If so, turn it all around. Put padding on wall and you brace against the
wall with wheel facing out to room.

Look through articles written by John Glick where he speaks about back
issues and working at the wheel:

Hi Taylor,

John Glick wrote a good article that might be on his website.
It is called the Road to Sciatica, or something like it. I'm sure it is in
the archives.
It influenced me to buy a stand up wheel. It has helped me a lot.
I think the wheel head should be about navel high.
He also said that he works close to a wall with his back to the wall
so he can't slouch. I read it a few years ago, so I may be off a little.

I hope you feel better quickly. I recommend Ayangar yoga if you have
any good teachers close by.

Best,

Rikki Gill

I don't throw standing up, but I don't think I'd want
to. I get back pain just from doing the dishes
standing up while leaning slightly forward, and
that doesn't take hours, either. Some people
swear by throwing while standing, but everyone's
back is different. If yours hurts from standing up
while leaning forward, then (like the old joke),
quit doing that!

Hey Taylor: Sorry to hear about your back. I hope that it is better by the
time you read this.
Lot's of good advise already. I throw standing, it helped the back. You sa=
y
the it is bad back pain, and can't move without pain--- have your back
checked out by a Doctor! IMHO, All the advise on wheel placement etc, will
not help if you have a ruptured disc or something serious.
After two back surgeries, I now do yoga and lift weights like my life
depends on it... I guess it does.

Taylor

I agree with "wheel head at navel level"

I also get back ache from standing to wash dishes- I stand with a 3/4" thic=
k
board under my toes which helps and do back stretches one I got from a
friend who called it "the dead bug pose" is to lie on your back and hug you=
r
knees to your chest.
Lee's mat idea is good. I've found even a piece of cardboard is good in a
pinch.

A couple of questions to ask yourself-
"what am I doing different from usual after this break- what did I forget t=
o
do?"
"who am I mad at"- I read an interesting article years back by an MD who
said he got 80% of his patients relief when he had them answer that
question. the theory being they held their anger in as tension in their
lower back.

At the concert last night, I noticed that conductor Edo de Waart was
sitting on a high stool, like a bar stool, with his feet on the floor.
His rear was just on the edge of the seat.

Before I made my platform, I used a bar stool and put my
shimpo on a crate. My legs were extended like when standing, but I
could put my feet on the crate when centering.

I used to have a lot of leg pain when I threw with the shimpo
flat on the floor. Lifting it and using a bar stool took care of
that. The Leach Woodley requires a similar posture. I need to put
a new cushion on the saddle. The wood gets hard when you sit on it
all day.

The throwing platform seems to help the legs and back too.
I have blocks on the floor of the platform that are level with the
Korean wheel.

Like many I can't stand for any length of time.
My solution is twofold:
I set my seat far enough away from the wheel so that when leaning forward t=
o=3D
work, my back is hollow, not arched.=3D20
The second is that I have installed a "Bum Stop" on every wheel seat I have=
e=3D

Think about it. You're sat down leaning forward into the clay, and where is=
y=3D
our backside trying to go? As hard as possible in the other direction, and =
y=3D
ou are trying to stop it as well as throw. No wonder your back hurts.=3D20
I have two damaged Discs in my lower back. With a Bum Stop in place I have =
n=3D
o problems, in fact you could say: "The Bum Stops Here!"

Thanks everyone. I've recovered (mostly) and am sure that my bad
throwing habits are partially to blame for my back going out so
spectacularly.

The one change that I should have known about, probably knew about
months ago when I was throwing last, was raising that wheel head to
the magic height. It is now about 4 inches higher that it was and I am
having to unlearn all that horrible throwing posture I taught myself.
Such a booby.

I found the Glick article several years ago and it was one of the
reasons I planned on setting up my new wheel the way I have. I will
rig myself a leaning board very soon.

Just the change in wheel height has caused me to regress in my
throwing skill as much of my current technique is apparently tied to
very harmful habits. Those habits, while allowing me to make some nice
pots up to now, threaten to put me WAY down in my back.
