selling pots...and ideas

Ah, the new intolerance. Isn't it a peach? =3D20

DO NOT attend a Christmas sale, unless you are a faithful Christian. DO =
=3D
NOT buy pirogi from the Ukrainian Church's Lent Pirogi sale, because you =
=3D
are not of their persuasion. The Plant Sale at Notre Dame High School =3D
must be shunned by non Catholics...and on and on.

The underlying assumption here is what? That if you buy a pot from =3D
someone who advertizes that s/he is "born again" you will be ....Do you =3D
really think someone who believes what you do not, and does not believe =3D
what you do cannot be a serious potter, as=3D20
involved and serious as you? When one goes to Japan and buys pots does =
=3D
not subscribe to their beliefs? Does buying something made in China =3D
make one a Communist? =3D20

Cultures are permeated by beliefs. Everyone believes something. Just =3D
because that potter over there does not advertize his strong support of =3D
Flat Tax , or Vegan does not mean s/he does not believe...

Yes. IF someone sells pots while preaching Death to All XXX, or like =3D
that, you know they give money to the odious, and you do not
want to give them YOUR money. But beyond that?

The pot, the pot, the clay is what it is about. And that is the belief =3D
I preach!!! Shun me. Go ahead! I can use the peace and quiet.

You got my point (Lili picks up irony every time.). Isn't that the
silliness of it all? It is called taking selective offense.

That's the key. Proselytizing, even if it is simply pimping
your pots, will turn people off. Some people just want a mug for
their coffee. Others see using clay instead of plastic as a
political statement. Grown ups and talk about nuanced ideas.

Authoritarian personalities demand black and white rules.
A flexibility of mind demands that you adjust to the situation.

Lili,

Maybe I am not as with it as I think but I have not seem a lot of signs of
this "new intolerance" Do you have any actual evidence or are you just
creating another straw man.

If you really want peace and quiet maybe don't make such an effort to stir
controversy where none exists.

I must have missed a post where someone said this.

Lili, thanks for pulling this discussion
up from it's descent into quibbling nonsense.

Of course it is about the clay. Mostly. Those
whose beliefs require them to require others
to share those beliefs must have a tough time
of it. Not to mention a hard sell.

Peace and quiet? Ho ho - you'll be lucky!

Indeed. That's what I said. Keep it out,
or lose sales. That's what YOU said. We
ALL said it.

Except some.

Really?? Pulling it "up" by using a reductio ad absurdum
argument?!?!?! Surely you jest. The point is and it still stands that
as a general rule if you don't want to loose a segment of your buying
public, it would be best to keep political statements and "hot topic"
issues out of your selling arena. So far no argument has been put
forth to dispute that with any validity.

=3DA0=3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0I've never met anybody with this perspective. =3DA0A =
straw man =3D
argument.

=3DA0=3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 One of the nice aspects of doing work wi=
thin a theme=3D
, is
that the work and venues have a self-selected audience. =3DA0 =3DA0And it
actually is conducive to peace and quiet.

=3DA0=3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 Folks make pots for a=3DA0variety=3DA0of=
reasons. =3DA0 We=3D
can milk
toast our perspective, but then we suffer from a lack of diversity.
=3DA0=3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0 =3DA0We bused (because of the snowfall a=
nd parking) to=3D
St.
Paul, to the Ordway to hear the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. =3DA0 It was
Mozart, John Adams and Strauss. =3DA0 I would not have went to a concert
that only had John Adams or Strauss' work, but these were a good
combination. =3DA0 The interesting thing, is that while Mozart was great
(as I expected) Adams' =3DA0Shaker Loops was my favorite of the three. =3DA=
0 I
generally prefer classical to modern, but Shaker Loops was pretty
stunning.
It was used in Barfly, the movie about=3DA0Charles Bukowski (who my wife
hosted for a reading and had her in her home when she edited the
magazine Steppenwolf. Jean says in his reading contract he required
two sixpacks at the reading. She said it was for performance sake.
We was totally sober otherwise.)
I did not care for the Strauss, but it was really good to
hear his work.

When I lectured in Little Rock, there was a retrospective
of the late Viola Frey's work. I'd only seen individual pieces of her
work in person, here and there. I thought the retrospective helped
me understand her work more completely. Certainly, not as
enlightening as it would have been to talk to her personally about her
social politics.
