advice on creating a toumbek drum

updated thu 20 jan 11

Hi All, I've been asked to create toumbek drums for a class project in
my school district.
I was thinking of a tar paper cone shape for the bottom and a bowl
made in a mold for the
top since the kids can make them easier. Then I need to purchase goat
skins for the top.
I thought someone may have made something like this before and could
offer some
pointers? Thank so much

That will probably do fine. Try searching some other
conventional spellings - doumbek or dumbek -
for some design variations. The open end is often
more cylindrical than conical, so wrapping a slab
around a paper-covered pipe might be easiest. You
can always flare it a bit after assembly. You can
also get synthetic drumhead material if needed.

Drums, like bells, resonate best when their thickness
is even, so it's worthwhile to clean up any slab-seam
overlaps.

Hi Gina - there is a teriffic book - from Mud to Music - describes how to
make this drum as well as all sorts of others. I keep meaning to make one -
inspired especially since I went to a drumming workshop last Sunday!
