This is always what comes to my mind when folks say their primary
reasons for attending Art Fairs is to sell. That attitude reduces us
to being on the same level as a used car salesman or a telemarketer.
I sell so I can make pots. Not the other way around.
Many established folks, I've spoken to several, don't do
fairs for sales, but as a service to their customers. The reasons I
signed up for Art At Saint Kate's when I first got back to the USA,
was to network and build a mailing list. Being out of the country
for almost 9 years, more or less makes your mailing list obsolete.
At the Pottery Festival in Mashiko, potters were so busy
that the festival was a place you were able to find potter friends and
visit with them.
My primary motivations is not to sell pots but to inspire
creativity in other folks. Education is really a huge part of it.
I put my artist's statement up here that explains it:

Susan, great post. When I started in clay over 60 years ago and after
showing my work at my first art fair, I told myself that the public =3D
needs
educating after hearing the visitors questions, like "what is this for?" =
=3D
for
starters. Over the years, I have found that the task has never stopped. =3D
New
admirers of your work come into your life every day and they need to be
taught. I feel that it is the duty of every potter selling their work =3D
that
they need to teach; no matter how much or how little information one has =
=3D
to
offer, it will return tenfold in the long run.=3D20
