When Miri posted about changing clay bodies with MC6G results, I thought it
might be interesting to see what clay bodies others use with MC6G glazes. I=
am
soon to take the plunge and start making recipes from the book and am also
having to change clay bodies due to new supplier so would love feedback bef=
ore i
buy 500 lbs of clay!
Also maybe Ron could chime in with what clays he likes best with his glazes=
?

Hi Dana
I use some glazes on red bodies and some on porcelain cone 6 or white
stoneware clay.
I like the Armadillo Clay from Austin TX. The Cinco Rojo is excellent!
It will matter where you are unless the shipping is no option.

Hi Dana,
Our glazes should work well with most clays - you should get a
selection of clays from your supplier - pick the colours you like -
and test them to see if they hold water at cone 6. You should also try
a few of our glazes at the same time. They will look different on some
clays and that may help you decide which you want to use.
Best to pick a clay that will not leak if you are going to make
functional pottery - if you need to know how to test for absorbency
and shrinkage let me know and I'll send it.
The accepted overall shrinkage for throwing clays is around 12% so
test for that.
The fired colour of any clay will have an effect on the glazes - as
you can see from some of our pictures.
If you are concerned about crazing chapter 5 has a series of glazes -
they can be used to find the expansion of clays - once you have that
information you can extrapolate to other glazes. In other words - you
can know if a glaze is going to craze or not by calculating the
expansion.
One word of caution - waterfall brown can easily run on porcelain
clays - it can be used but you have to be careful.
