Hi Brad,
I throw a foot on bowls, especially large bowls, not always the smaller
ones. I never thought of using a coil to throw but just leave more clay on
the bottom and at trimming time just throw it up, fairly dry though as
otherwise you could get an s crack in the base. The pressure from the
outside hand forms a nice, though small, ring on the outside bottom of the
bowl too which catches glaze drips and runs. It's fun to do.
