slip is popping off my tiles!

Hello,

I am using Cynthia Bringle's slip recipe on Red B-mix with grog (cone 6
clay). I've used the slip on any number of clay bodies and I've never had a
problem. My friend invited me to make tiles for a show and I had just
purchased the B-mix so I made the tiles with it. I pulled them out of the
bisque kiln yesterday and some of the slip had popped off some of the tiles
- not all of them but naturally the ones I liked the best. I'm wondering
why this happened. I'm going to try to decorate them and put a clear glaze
(from MC6G) on them. I'm wondering if I'm going to be in for bigger trouble
if I do this. Might the slip pop off with the glaze? We've had some really
frigid weather and my studio was freezing cold. Would that have affected it
after it was dry?

I know I should have tested - I've learned my lesson.

Thanks for your help.

Well, as a guess, it may be because B-mix=3D20
is halfway to beng a porcelain, and has a=3D20
higher shrinkage and CoE than many standard=3D20
bodies.=3D20

Wouldn't be my first choice for tile, anyhow. I'd=3D20
prefer a less plastic body for that, but of course=3D20
that's personal. If you like it for tile, carry on, but=3D20
a new engobe recipe may be in order if you do.=3D20
A new clay body (or your old one again) might be=3D20
preferable, but harder to change on short notice.

Hi Snail
What clay body would you use for a handmade ceramic tile @ cone 6?

Something with considerable grit and low shrinkage,
to resist warping and make accurate sizing of the
project a little easier. Who needs plasticity for tile?
