i feel like i should send a check to pete pinnell
as a stipend for all the pots i have sold
with pete`s red on them. he would just smile.
he gives freely. always. one fine potter, and a great
teacher. i am proud that he is a friend.
i use his cranberry recipe.
they are all three good, solid, well researched
recipes.
they work. and, i always give credit, as i call
them pete's red glaze..and i often tell folks that
he is a teacher at the univ of nebraska..etc.
as a side bar:
the clay body matters.
the temp matters.
the amount of reduction matters.
and, down firing really helps and matters
a great deal.
i use a porcelain slip (25X4) on my dark stoneware body/platters.
if i fire to cone 11+ the color turns purple to red/deep.
consistent modest reduction works well. (now, how do
you tell folks what that is..??? the flame from my
middle peep is about 2+ inches. and, i do burn wood
at certain times with the damper semi-closed during the
cooling cycle.
and, i always down fire, and make sure the cooling cycle
on reds happens twice. red as can be. i hate to say this.
it is boring. it always works, and i can do the coleman ad.
a kiln full of bright red pots. that is not a joke. in fact, it is easy.
