Hi Wash fans:
I've had trouble with red iron brushwork applied under and over glazes. Th=
e
main thing has been losing color due to the iron being taken up by very
active feldspar/lime glazes as in celadons and chuns. To counter that
problem I've added ball clay to the mix to introduce mainly, alumina. The
alumina will help in keeping the iron from going into suspention in the
glaze and the ball clay helps greatly with suspention. I use 50% RIO and
50% J-2 Ball clay in the mix. If there are problems with this wash lifting
and peeling you can calcine some of the ball clay.
regards, Craig Martell
