Hi All. I just installed my new km-1 Wall mounted controller (skutt) on my
skutt 1027. I installed everything correctly, and have followed all the
guidelines in firing a manual kiln with a controller setup. I hear the
controller making noises, and it has an accurate temperature read on it, bu=
t
there is no rise of temperature int he kiln, and an error message that read=
s
error-1. Any suggestions would be much appreciated guys and gals. Thanks
alot.

Justin:
Go here:
http://www.skutt.com/pdf/index.html
When the page loads, go to the Manuals box and click on "Kiln Master
Manual" for kilns manufactured after March 1, 2006. A pdf download will
start. The information you want is in Appendix 4 on page 40. It is
showing Error 1 as a controller is sensing a rise of less than 12
degrees per hour. Various causes and corrections are listed. Be sure
the kiln is wired to the controller properly, and that the manual
switches are set as they should be.
If all else fails, call Skutt. They may be able to troubleshoot over
the phone.

I don't know what climate you are firing your Skutt kiln in, but in =3D20
Michigan, in winter I often get a thermocouple error from my wall =3D20
mounted kiln controllers.
What I do to overcome this problem is I take a propane torch, the =3D20
small kind that plumbers use and I preheat the inside of the kiln with =3D2=
0=3D
it to about 50=3DB0 Fahrenheit.
I load the kiln first, and then with the lid open I just move the =3D20
torch in a circular direction around the kiln aiming the heat into the =3D2=
0=3D
gap between the shelves and the kiln walls. I watch the temperature =3D20
on the controller move upwards and when it gets into the 50's, I press =3D2=
0=3D
the start button. I don't have to do this in warm weather, only when =3D20=
=3D
the temperature drops below freezing.
Preheating an electric kiln, whodda thunk it?

As I understand, you are firing a manual kiln with a portable digital
controller.
Make sure the Kiln Sitter is loaded and engaged, the Limit Timer is set,
and all kiln switches are turned to High.
