Mel, in a downdraft kiln where the chamber and the stack share a wall if yo=
u leave a hole towards the top of the chamber to the stack you don't need t=
he benzomatic to get the draft going... When I built kilns my back wall was=
a single brick thickness shared by the stack and the back of the chamber; =
the hole I left was about 2.5x2.5 inches. Was also a convenient place to fi=
re the previous firing's kiln god... and the draw would start automatically=

I've always had plenty of chimney on my kiln and the ones at NCC so I
have never had a drafting problem. In fact, I usually start with the
damper half shut so there isn't too much draft.

But I do use a self lighting torch next to the wheel.
