iron, yellow, rutile etc

from a non chemist point of view.
just a dirt potter.

every iron i have ever tried, gives me a new
color, surface or effect.

ochre is different than yellow iron, there
are differences from county to county.
mine to mine things change. red iron is not
just `red iron`...it depends.

if you are firing in a neutral or oxidizing atmosphere,
you can really see the difference.

if you use heavy reduction, it will often just turn black
or brown. gets stinky.

there are so many factors that it is hard to count them.
it all depends.

that is why glazes do not travel well. what one potter
gets for green, someone else will get brown.
like celedon. who knows? i get blue, someone else says
i am nuts..they get green. same recipe.
who knew?
i get blue celedon with iron bearing clay. cone 11.
lite reduction. why? don't ask me. it should not happen all
the time. but, it does.

look at my web home page, that first set of bowls.
one deep red, the one next to it...soft yellow hare's fur.
sort of the same glaze. changed the iron around.

joe koons was stunned. he found a rather nice bright yellow
iron from california. and, some of you know me, i picked
it not for its chemical analysis, but, `man that was a pretty yellow
in the bag`.
that is how i do things...and, it worked just fine.
some want answers, i want a decent instinct for things.

we have gotten more emails and calls from around the world with that
yellow temmoku glaze then any other in joe or my history.
he got tired of arguing with people. he would just slammed the phone.
`we want that glaze, how did you do it...why, how, give it now?` fu

it was just a very nice yellow iron oxide, fired in a high temp/cone
12/neutral. bright yellow. and, like joe says....some friend of ours
got a million bucks for his recipe. we were a year late. i wish it was
a secret, we would then laugh. it is not.

i will take a pix of a sweet yellow mug that came from that firing series.
you will get a kick out of it.
yellow, indeed. that mug was in a box that i got back from joe/california.
it was all dusty and wrapped in paper. i said, `man, that is a nice
yellow mug.` i don't even remember taking it from the kiln.
it is on the clayart webpage right now. nfs.

But, Bill, not all of us will be at NCECA to hear you.

That's true, only the privileged few will know...

I'll post on clay art how to achieve the color (well, at least the way I di=
d
it) after NCECA.

Hi Bill,

I have to miss NCECA this year, so will not get to see you mug or
participate in all the good things planned for Clayart. I look forward to s=
eeing your
explanation of how you got the color when you get back from NCECA.

I hope someone will post details of the workshops planned for NCECA for
those of us who cannot be there to enjoy and learn.

Have a great time, everyone.

All the best.

Veena
