Salt-Kiln Building Workshop

with Shane Mickey

April 17 - 30, 2011



Penland School of Crafts presents a salt kiln-building workshop with
potter/kiln builder Shane Mickey. During this two week class students will
help in the construction of Penland?s new, large salt kiln. The class will
build during the day and make pots in the evening. Shane will lecture on
kiln building theory, principles of design, and sources for materials. The
class will culminate in the loading and firing of the new salt kiln. While
the kiln is cooling the class will take a field trip to visit various kilns
and studios in the area.



Shane Mickey has been building kilns for nearly 20 years for private
clients, colleges, and craft schools. He is a professor Western Piedmont
Community College?s Professional Crafts Program. He maintains a studio
outside of Bakersville, NC and sells his work at galleries throughout the
Southeast.



Tuition: $814; dorm housing and meals: $754; other housing options and meal
plans for off-campus students available.
