Thank you to all who have generously replied with advice regarding =3D
firing our HF-16 Alpine kiln "Don". I will share with the ClaySpace RAs =
=3D
that fire this kiln the information I have amassed. =3D20
I feel the answer to the question regarding weather to cover the side =3D
ports, is a variable each RA will need to decide for themselves and what =
=3D
will work best for their glazes. The majority of real world advice I =3D
received indicates the rear side ports should be left open and some =3D
flame there during reduction is fine, and can be useful to gage =3D
reduction levels. Others plug the holes. Alpine has advised me they no =
=3D
longer have these side ports on their kilns and the artist should do =3D
whatever works best for their firing technique. The RA feud over "to =3D
cover, or not to cover" will now have more information from =3D
knowledgeable and experienced sources to consider. At this time, I will =
=3D
not set a studio policy requiring the ports to be left open or closed. I =
=3D
will make them some soft brick pugs they can use to plug the holes if =3D
desired. Wish me luck!
