Hello everyone:

Here is a curious question: Can you add mason stains to a raku recipe?
Does it alter the colors? Does it enhance the colors?
I was just pondering the possibilities.

Dan,
I did some really nice raku a while back using a standard clear crackle
over sprayed on mason stains. The colors fluxed the glaze a little and
didn't bother the crackle. I never tried to add it directly to the glaze
tho.

Try it, should work fine. I use stains, sometimes I jazz them up with
about 1/2% copper carb, just for a bit of sparkle!

I was thinking of adding some Copper Carb to a clear crackle glaze in a
attempt to get something like a pale celadon with cracks. Any ideas or
suggestions?

Hi Debi,

You can add copper carb, any of the oxides or mason stains too, to clear
crackle and it works just fine. You may need to experiment with percentages
though - I think you may need a little more than you would usually use.
Sometimes the oxides can lower the melting temp and cause the glaze to get
slighly runnier...

By the way - I grew up in Calabasas. What's it like out there these days?
And, yes, I am still called a valley girl...
