soda ash & elements at cone 6

Hi, everyone.

We have a new person in our studio who LOVES shinos.

He knows that they are typically fired in a reduction atmosphere.

And we only have an electric kiln, which we fire to cone 6.

He'd still like to see how shinos look at cone 6 ox.

here's my question:

will the high amounts of soda ash in shino recipes damage the elements?

thanks for any & all help.

Hey Nori
This is just a guess --
but Coyote has a lot of shino glazes to be used ^6 in oxidation in electri=
c
kilns and they don't damage the elements at all --
So my guess is: no, your friend's shino glazes won't hurt the kiln

Doubt soda ash would have an affect on the elements, especially if your kil=
n
has a direct vent.
Not sure what type of "shino look" this person is seeking, but in oxidation
the shino will come out white.
May want to have the person experiment with spraying/brushing iron
over/under the glaze.
May also suggest this person run tests of "Nutmeg" glaze that was developed
for the woodfire look. One iteration of this glaze is on my web site.

All -

Not all shino glaze recipes contain soda ash, far as I can tell, and there
are many many recipes for shino glazes. The Coyote shino glaze made for ^6
ox may not contain soda ash at all. I'd find out for sure before firing a
glaze containing soda ash in an electric kiln.

My 2 cents worth.

Good luck.

Dear nori,

Sodium Carbonate in this mixture will begin to melt in the 850-900 deg C
region.

It will act as a solvent for the silicates. In the chemical reaction that
happens Carbon Dioxide will be released.

At these temperatures I doubt if Carbon Dioxide would act as a reducing
agent. It is more likely to behave as an inert gas. So I support the view
that the elements of the kiln will not be harmed.

Falls Creek Shino is a glaze that looks like shino in cone 6 oxidation. I =
think
the recipe is in the archives.
