Marci Blattenberger and I and the members of PPIO (Porcelain Painters
International Online) have been talking recently about a product that
china painters call "glaze" that is essentially clear china paint,
used sometimes as an overcoat over china paint that isn't quite glossy
enough. She has found a container of this stuff which listed the
constituent oxides (in alphabetical order so not much help in figuring
out the real composition) but then she sent this information along to
me as well. Does anybody have any idea what this means? I've never
heard of a CAS number. And does that frit number mean anything to
anybody? Brand? Composition?
In the china painting world, it's almost impossible to find out what's
in any of the materials because the formulas are all proprietary, so
when you get a clue like this you have to pursue it.
Thanks.

It also has a CAS # ( NO idea what that is but its after each
ingredient) ...
eg:
after the AlO the Cas # is 1344-28-1
the frit says 65997-18-4

Hello Paul
I must apologize to you and the list for making some hasty assumptions in=
=3D
my=3D20
previous post regarding CAS# 65997-18-4
1. Lead bisilicate has indeed got this CAS# but on further research I ha=
=3D
ve=3D20
discovered that all glass frits in general share this number. Therefore =
=3D
the flux=3D20
is not necessarily lead bisilicate which came up first for CAS# 65997-18-=
=3D
4 in=3D20
Google.
2. Frit 3269 is actually a sodium borosilicate frit which also shares th=
=3D
is number.=3D20=3D20
I made the hasty conclusion that the frit referred to was lead bisilicate=
=3D
and=3D20
therefore 3269 without doing my research properly. However Frit 3269 is=3D=
20=3D
described in Ferro's MSDS for 3269 as
PRODUCT CODE:3269
PRODUCT TRADE NAME:3269 FLUX
CAS NO:65997-18-4*
CHEMICAL FAMILY:Decorative Borosilicate Coating
PRODUCT TYPE:Glass Enamel/Flux
I made the mistake of focussing on the words glass/enamel flux and glossi=
=3D
ng=3D20
over the rest and not even registering the word borosilicate.
Once again my apologies for the misinformation.
Cheers=3D20
