For those who may not know exactly who Toshiko Takaezu was, check out
an essay I wrote about her when I was in grad school:

Like Dale, I admired her work and philosophy.

Tony ect. all-

What a wonderful essay on Toshiko. How vivid I recallToshako coming to me
at Penland where I set up the first bronze foundry
in the '70's. At that time she was into mistic little pebble sounds which
she inserted into her bulbous closed forms. She would take
small bronze fragments from our castings and insert them into her pots
before firing them. Whenever her pot was picked up ,strange metalic
rattelings could be heard within these forms. A real delighted suprise to
experience!

Toshiko Takaezu and her work influenced many many young aspiring artists=
=3D

and potters, in ways she may not have even realized.=3D20
long ago, when i first got my mitts in clay,( like many many others in
small studios, urban and rural,) i hungrily pored over the first images =
=3D
of
ceramic sculpture and pottery i ever saw. pictures in ceramics monthly ,=
=3D

posters tacked onto studio walls, showing me marvelous work from all ove=
=3D
r
the world.=3D20
When I saw Toshiko Takaezu's work it spoke to me. i thought, oh, this is=
=3D

something i could do! it was eye opening to see a woman who was working
large scale with clay, and it was one small flame, along with others that=
=3D

lighted the way for me and many others. even a photo on a scrap of a
magazine, can motivate and inspire.
i never knew her or she me, but if i could I would take her hand and say
thank you.
