Before I respond to a couple of requests from Linkedin..... is it the
same as Facebook? WillI get "befriended" by a bunch of people I don't
know? Mike Gordon

I agree with Wendy's email below. And I also have FB locked down tight
because I put photos, make comments, etc on it.

I use LinkedIn.com exclusively for business. For my business (not pottery
related) making as many contacts as I can is important. I have 960
LinkedIn.com contacts. Maybe only 100 or less are people I actually know.
It is a professional tool for linking up with other professionals. Nothing
personal about it although I do have my work history (like a resume) on it
but only because I have chosen to do so. It is up to you if you want to do
so. In my line of work (corporate recruiter aka head-hunter) having my wor=
k
history gives me credibility in my market space. Credibility =3D more
business in my world.

I keep Facebook completely separate. Friends and family only as well as my
Fan Pages for my pottery and crochet design business. If a business contac=
t
tries to link with me on Facebook I decline but sent them to my LinkedIn.co=
m
account.

It keeps work and personal separate. My work life is corporate, suit
wearing, all business, all the time. But when I am not at work, I love to
be in my studio or enjoying life. Two separate worlds, two separate
websites.

Hope that makes sense.

Regards,
Lisa

Mike,

I have been a Linked In member for years, but I must qualify my response by
saying I have not checked it out for privacy anywhere near as closely as I
watch Facebook.

Linked In has more of a business focus, as opposed to the social focus of
Facebook. I don't think it is as valuable a target for those who would do
harm because FB, and similar sites, are much larger targets.

I have FB locked down a tight as it can be. I have never done anything
special with Linked In settings. I don't believe I get any spam from either=
.

As for invites, I think I have been invited twice in maybe four years by
someone I don't know. They were both other professionals overseas, so
probably just looking for opportunities for partnerships -- more or less th=
e
goal of Linked In.

So ... if the invitations are interesting people, you might want to accept
and see what it is all about. I don't use it much right now, as I have no
need for networking. I can certainly see how powerful it would be if I
wanted to spread my name by engaging in conversations and answering
questions that highlight my skill. I've watched deals bud ... it's a great
way to do business.

I don't know how others handle the two, but my linkedin account is more pro=
fessional (day job) related and facebook is family, friends and my esty pot=
tery site page.

In some professional circles, it is used as a place to post resumes
and/or CV's - without implying that you are seeking employment, or
possibly not seeking employment at all.
