John,

Trickled down no - a rushing river yes.

Mandated for the community college system in Virginia last year: no
reimbursements for travel costs outside of the state!
Last couple of NCECA's been outta pocket for me.
I have been very fortunate in years past to have my college pick up some of
the cost, but I expect I'll be paying for the foreseeable future.

Have colleague teaching art in high school in North Carolina.
She just found out she doesn't have a job next year.
The Federal stimulus money that went to states these last couple years is
gone next year. Unless revenue picks up, states are hurtin' for certain nex=

year.

As a teacher, I have paid my own way to NCECA;=3D20
my college would never consider paying the costs (or=3D20
even helping out) toward part-time faculty attendance=3D20
at conferences. Few colleges do, and remember that=3D20
the majority of all college faculty these days are=3D20
part-time. It's not just the institutions that have cut back -=3D20
in this case, it's not something that was ever offered -=3D20
but individuals that are seen as the public face of their=3D20
school may in fact be footing their own bill and have=3D20
less money this year to do that.=3D20

I skipped NCECA this year for other reasons, but even=3D20
if I hadn't already made that decision, I probably would=3D20
have bailed out anyway. Having a teaching contract in=3D20
hand is no guarantee of actually teaching any of the=3D20
courses listed on it. Since full-time faculty are required=3D20
to teach a minimum number of courses, if their courses=3D20
don't make minimum enrollment, the part-time faculty=3D20
must give up their courses to the full-timers, and a lot of=3D20
part-time faculty have been hit that way this year. I am=3D20
very fortunate to have two income streams, sales and=3D20
teaching, but neither is secure or predictable. Surely no=3D20
one can be faulted for not making NCECA part of their=3D20
financial allocation this year. Even if NCECA didn't cost=3D20
a dime, time away from the studio has costs of its own.

I'd like to clarify my own statements on this. The Craft Center does pay
for our table in the exhibition hall, and I have sometimes received partial
compensation for my expenses, but I have always paid part of my expenses,
and several times when things were tight I have paid all of my own expenses=
.
Also, I'd like to make it clear that when I am at NCECA I spend most of
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday daytime hours sitting at my table in the
exhibition hall. That is where I want to be, talking to prospective
students for our BFA program and workshops and publicizing my programs, the
Appalachian Center for Craft, and Tennessee Tech University. I am spending
most of my time working for the Craft Center when I am there. If the
conference is in a place I want to be, then I still make the commitment to
pay my own expenses if I have to. Sorry Floridians, but no matter how much
I would love to have seen Lori Leary and Bill Schrann and Mel and Logan and
so many others (sorry I didn't include all your names!), I had no desire at
all to spend a lot of money going to South Florida. Now, Seattle is an
entirely different story, and I will be glad to pay my way if I cannot get
any funding.

It was a certainly a quieter conference, except perhaps at the shot glass
exchange, and I missed the opportunity to spend a little face-to-face time
with Vince and many others. The ones that were there, well, it was just
great to see all of them and welcome some new faces.

But I also knew that this was a historical moment for Clayart and its
relationship with NCECA and I wanted to be there to lend support. Spending
extra time with Mel and Lori was just an extra unexpected bonus that made
this one that much more special.

I had responded to the NCECA request for folks to conduct student critiques
saying I would be available between 1pm & 3pm - little did I know it would
be for the entire 2 hours! But I had a great time spending 1/2 hour with
each student, being warned that time was nearly up for each one. Got a
chance to meet/talk with one of Tony C's students - fabulous young woman.

I know my college will not be supporting me financially for the next
conference, but I will be in Seattle!

I only made it for an hour on saturday afternoon, but the beach was
awesome. I'm not in love with florida either, but it has a few good
sides. Carl Hiaasen telling everyone to leave as fast as we could was
another.
