Do any of you have any favourite books showing some good beginners' projects
in sculpture and handbuilding? I'd very much appreciate any recommendations.

Veronica: Handuilding Ceramic Forms by Elsbeth Woody; Coiled Pottery by
Betty Blandino, also Frank Giorgini's Handmade Tiles and finally, Creating
Ceramic Miniatures by Arla and John Kenny -- these should all help you get
started. Good luck!

Kathy Triplett just published one in the last year or so called Handbuilt
Ceramics that is pretty well done. Doesn't discuss sculpture though.
She's teaching a one week workshop at Arrowmont, Gatlinburg, TN in March
if you'd rather learn from her first hand.

A book I find the best all round for beginners is The Complete Potter's
Companion by Tony Birks (1993) Conran Octopus, London. ISBN 1 85029 431 3
cost #12.99 here.
It has excellent colour photographs, both series of how to do various
techniques (both throwing and handbuilding) and wonderfully inspiring
examples of work. Other sections cover glazing and firing. I also like the
fact that the paper is good quality so you can have it beside you when you
work without fear of permanently ruining it!

Hi Veronica,
Try "Children, Clay and Sculpture", by Cathy Weisman Topal. I have
found it useful for both children AND adult projects.

When I taught beginners years ago, I used a little book titled "Ceramics by
Slab" by Joan & Anthony Priolo. It was part of a "Little Craft Book Series"
published by Sterling Publishing Co, Inc., NY. It was a real favorite with
students of all ages - and the projects are geared for success by everyone.
