In 1952 I was buying oil paints in Regina. I asked the counter assistant
where I could find the local Art Gallery only to told there was not on in
the town. Another customer told me I could team up with him the following
day which I did. He took me to the College. My guide was Art McKay and he
was Art teacher there. It was a Saturday morning and his art rooms were
crowded with teenagers working. Painting Sculpting and printmaking.
Between 1970 and 1972 when I was a student teacher I was invited to mentor
at the Further Education Annex of Sunderland School of Art where adolescent=
s
engaged in a wide range of artistic pursuits each Saturday morning.
Institutions which provide artist facilities are well worth supporting. I a=
m
sure there may be Clayarters in your region who would be willing to make a
contribution of excess media.
Good luck with your venture.

You might be interested in a long-term project on this theme being =3D
undertaken by the Owen Sound Artists' Co-op. The OSAC is an artist run =3D
co-operative store/gallery in Owen Sound, Ontario. We have about 40 =3D
members working in different media; I'm currently serving as chairman.=3D20=
=3D

http://www.osartistsco-op.com/home.html

Along with being an outlet to sell our members' work, the OSAC is =3D
committed to fostering and developing the arts in our region.=3D20

We noticed that there is an aging demographic among regional artists, so =
=3D
last year we initiated a youth artist program through the regional high =3D
schools to get involved. "The Legacy Project" was a success, and we now =3D
have plans to expand the project to reach more young artists through =3D
exhibitions, workshops, and a mentoring program.

The Owen Sound Artists' Co-op has just been awarded an Ontario Trillium =3D
Foundation grant in the amount of $103,800.00 The grant will be used to =3D
fund The Legacy Project a multi-component program, spanning four years. =3D
A portion will be used to establish a dedicated youth art space =3D
adjoining the Co-op.=3D20

http://www.trilliumfoundation.org/cms/en/index.aspx

A summer youth artists' co-op will be set up in the space for youth aged =
=3D
16 to 29. Dubbed, "Next Generation," the summer co-op will provide risk =3D
free space and guidance for young artists to show and sell fine art and =3D
craft, with training in sales, customer service, marketing, display and =3D
exhibition assistance. One-on-one opportunities for mentorship with =3D
established artists in the same field will also be offered. The space =3D
will also be available to other children's and youth groups, such as =3D
schools and organizations, who wish to display their art and craft.

The grant will also be used to enhance our annual art and craft =3D
competition open to high school seniors in Grey and Bruce counties, that =
=3D
began last year. The competition differs from others in the area, in =3D
that there is no entry fee, all the entries are displayed, and the =3D
prizes are all art and craft related.

Another component of the project will be a series of workshops, hosted =3D
by working artists and artisans, set up throughout the region and open =3D
to high school seniors. The workshops, which will begin next March, will =
=3D
give the students a chance to engage in various types of art and craft =3D
that are not currently taught in high schools, and experiment with =3D
different techniques, practices and expressions.

Responses and support of these initiatives has been very good, and we =3D
are looking forward to the years ahead.
