I agree that he wasn't trying to simply find an occult method of saying a
well made pot. He was using a common definition that was easily understood
by his readership at that time. There was and is nothing occult nor obscure
about that definition. He was a proponent of standards being applied to
ceramics so it stands to reason that his intention was not ethical as in
morality but ethics as in standards for the profession.
