leveling a wheel

Oh my gosh! I need help leveling my new wheel...
I am sure others have had issues with this. I just got my first wheel, a
beautiful Shimpo VL Whisper, but there isn't a completely level spot in my
entire house, not the garage or even any room! I just want to know how does
one overcome this topsy-turvy problem?!?! Thanks in advance!

Curtis:
Shims. Plastic or wood (usually pine or cedar) available from every
hardware store on the planet.
Get a smaller level, and place it in the center of your wheel. Adjust
the speed so that it turns as slowly as the wheel allows.
Watching the bubble, determine where the "feet" of the wheel are and
start shimming. It should only take about 15 minutes or so.

Note though, that some wheels have adjusting feet, like on
furniture...screw them in or out. If so, you won't need shims.

A good (and cheap) shim is vinyl floor tile. They run about
a buck per 12" tile for the cheap ugly kind, but who cares?
They will be invisible when you are done. You cut them up
into wheel-leg-sized pieces and stack them until you reach
level. They are self-adhesive and waterproof and you can
buy single ones at almost any home-improvement store or
floor retailer. Unless your floor is dramatically worse than
mine, one or two tiles will do it.

I believe that there are some hex bolts on the legs of the VL. Get a
bullseye level (about $2 at most any hardware store) and place it in the
center of the wheel head. Loosen up the bolts, raise the wheel until level
then firmly tighten the bolts. It may be easier to have help. I would leave
one leg alone and simply adjust the other two.

A good solution to the problem should also consider how easy it is to clean
up around the wheel afterwards. An old wheel I had had shims and spacers an=
d
made it very difficult to clean around - so I only did a very rough job. I
got a new wheel with simple adjustments, I clean up better and all my studi=
o
is a cleaner place.

make a little frame for the wheel to sit on, put 3 or 4 adjustable feet
on the frame (little screw-in screw-out type are cheap), wheel on frame
and you are good to go...

It's not necessary to level the wheel to throw a pot. If the clay is center=

ed it will be a good pot regardless.
I've demonstrated this to students by tilting the wheel 10 degrees, even 30=

with a large plate. I don't think any of the wheels in our studio is perfe=

ctly level. I've checked with a small bubble level used to check record tur=

(remember those?). I think Mel's wheel is perfectly leveled. I'll have to c=
