Shipping Artwork Between
Countries

Nowadays=3D2C artists participating in exhibitions worldwide has
become a common thing. I have been asked about artwork shipping to or from
abroad for many times. Here are some questions and answers: =3D20

Q: How can I select a freight company?

A: There are many shipping companies that deliver your
artwork to or from other country=3D2C such as UPS=3D2C FredEx=3D2C regular =
Post O=3D
ffice
services=3D2C etc. First=3D2C you may think about how fast you want the del=
iver=3D
y to be.
For some heavy and large packages=3D2C you may use ground/ocean services to=
s=3D
ave
the shipping costs. You may chose door-to-door service. If you want to send
packages to Asian countries like Japan=3D2C Korea or China=3D2C you may be =
able=3D
to find
a country-specialist in the US. =3D20

Q: What about the customs duty?

A: Every country
has its own policy about receiving packages from other countries. For examp=
=3D
le=3D2C
the US duty-free limitation is $200 (different countries may be treated
differently)=3D2C or the receiver has to pay the import tax. What often hap=
pe=3D
ns to
artworks shipped from the other side is that many artists write a much high=
=3D
er
price or insurance value on the shipping document. After the artwork has ar=
=3D
rived
in the US=3D2C the custom officers ask the receiver for the import tax.=3D2=

If you are going to ship your artwork to other country=3D2C you
might need to check with a specialist of that country about the duty-free
limitation (It is $50 USD in China).=3D20

Q=3D3B Do you have any suggestions about packing?

A: Ceramic artworks are fragile items=3D2C so you have to get
your piece packed very well. Also=3D2C you have to avoid using any =3D93Sol=
id W=3D
ood=3D94
packing materials. You may use plywood=3D2C carton boxes=3D2C etc. If you u=
se a=3D
ny solid
wood packing materials=3D2C you may have to pay the fumigation fee (about $=
10=3D
0 to
$200).
