it is wise to have several locations and be able
to move it around...check many spots.

i just fill the holes with kaowool.

when you have things figured out, then leave
it where you get the best results.

I take it you mean to move it when it is cool? Try several firings with
separate locations?

I am scared to death to bump or jostle the thing. Can only afford one of
these, and from what I have read, they are rather fragile, and may droop
from being fired in a horizontal position.

My question was basically will it be OK to mount it horizontally in the
wall, since the lid raises and lowers? Or if I mount it horizontally, woul=
d
it be wise to turn it 180 degrees before I fire each time, to keep it from
bending in one direction, like flipping shelves? I may be over-thinking
this, but for an $800 investment, I want some knowledge before I jump in
willy-nilly. Obviously, age and wisdom are catching up with me!

I can move it to several locations in the walls, have holes already made fo=
r
the pyrometer that I keep plugged w/ Kaowool until I need to use them, so n=
o
problem there.

The probe should not have to be stuck into the kiln that far to cause
problems - an inch or two is sufficient. You can also purchase protection
tubes for the probe.

Robin,
Because the lid of your kiln raises you most definitely want to mount th=
e
Oxyprobe in the wall. Your only problem will be to determine which wall an=
d
how high on the wall. Unless you have an exceptionally effective burner
system, no location will represent the entire kiln atmosphere perfectly at
all times. That's why there is wisdom in Mel's suggestion to try different
locations to see what works for your firings.
The probe, assuming you also purchased a ceramic protection tube for it,
will most definitely not droop when installed horizontally.
You are very correct that the probe is not very resistant to mechanical
damage--that is, being smacked by a kiln shelf, etc. So picking a spot that
is safe from loading and unloading might be a part of your consideration,
too. However, they are repairable, and while the repair is not cheap it is
much less than the cost of a new one.
Good firing!

Thanks to all that have responded. I have placed the order with Axner, wil=
l
test mount the Oxyprobe in a couple of different places in the wall. Plan
on just test firing at least 3 sessions. Center front, just below my
pyrometer, center back about half way between flue and lid, and then the
third based on those two readings.

I will chart it out as recommended and report back, hopefully with some
great red and shino test tiles!
