I've been using free pallet wood for firing my wood kiln, and I've discover=

Apparently, the pallets were made in Pakistan. I get them from a guy down t=

It's a great source of free hardwood, but now I'm wondering about exposure =

Subject: methyl bromide in pallet wood?
I've been using free pallet wood for firing my wood kiln, and I've
discovered that most of the pallet wood I've been using has been fumigated
with methyl bromide, a very toxic pesticide.
Apparently, the pallets were made in Pakistan. I get them from a guy down
the road who recycles pallets. After disassembling used pallets, he stacks
various boards outdoors for me and another potter to pick up.
It's a great source of free hardwood, but now I'm wondering about exposure
to residual pesticide. I've started using a fan to blow sawdust away from m=

when cutting the boards and also using a mask to avoid breathing dust. I've
searched the internet for information. Some folks say the chemical
dissipates quickly and there should be no problems, while some say wear
gloves and a respirator when handling. Apparently, there are two methods to
kill bugs in wood used for pallets: heat treatment and methyl bromide.
Methyl bromide has been used (and may still be used) to fumigate soil in
agriculture (tomatoes and strawberries) and fumigate dry grains before
storing. I'm wondering if anyone on the list here has any experience or
knowledge they can share about methyl bromide and pallets. You can view my
