I like to play with multiple art toys. At the moment, I'm working my
way through making samples of new to me crochet stitches. These
samples will eventually get hand dyed and will be placed under the
ceramic jars I made. Even with terra sig on the bottom, the jars still
have the capacity to scratch the corian counter top.

I've seen crochet used as a texture tool on platters. One potter
colors in all the little spaces between the stitches. Lovely work, but
something that would drive me crazy to do. Another uses the crocheted
doily to make an impression in the pattern, cuts the platter to mimic
the shape of the doily, and then uses a single glaze. Hm....
interesting, but not quite what I want.

I may try the texture technique and use a glaze that breaks over
texture. It would require the right crochet motif - but it could be
interesting. Done right, it could make deep enough ridges that the
piece could be a decent soap dish. Ideas in one medium flow into the
next.

Anyway, the latest crochet sample is on the blog.

I've done that. One of the things I do is brush colored slips or engobes
over the piece while the crochet doily is still in place, when the slip
dries I pull the doily off carefully. White slip over a dark clay is
stunning. Then I either glaze with a clear or a translucent glaze. Or at
leather hard stage I'll brush the whole piece with an oxide and the
gently wipe the raised surface clean. Another thing I do is make slabs
with different doily patterns, tear the pieces and reassemble them in a
lump mold. Lots of fun things to do with crochet and clay.
