Hi All,
Has anyone ever surrounded pots with left over charcoal from the ash pit of
a wood kiln?
If so, what were the results....especially on a rather high iron body?
Did the charcoal leave a melted mess on the kiln shelves?
Thanks,
Bruce Bowers

Bruce,
Yes, people sometimes surround the pots with charcoal, in order to
produce effects known as "fuse" or the Japanese term "yohen." There
was a guy who used to post to clayart who poured little scoops of
charcoal around the pots at the end of firing. It produces really
interesting colors and textures, especially on high iron bodies.
I get the effect sometimes from unglazed pots that are right next to
the side stoke fireboxes, where charcoal can pile against the pots.
It's some of my favorite stuff to come from the kiln. I think it's
particularly good on smooth clays without any grog or sand added.
It doesn't make any extra mess on the shelves that I can see.
good firings,

Bruce: You should be fine, with the shelves. The high iron body if fired t=
o
hot could be a problem. How hot are you firing? Here is a picture of a pot
that was buried in coals.

The only word of caution is that you could be in for a lot of work cleaning
the pots afterwords, so
