Grease and oil will have soaked down into the wood.
If they are real oily, put down a layer of kitty litter first to see what
you can soak up.
Then scrub with a wash of water and a degreasing detergent - I use somethin=
=3D
g
called Greased Lightning before.
Then sand down the surface, vibrating or belt sander, to expose new wood.
Give it a coat of good exterior grade polyurethane.
That should do the trick.

Hi Logan,
Can you maybe put some images of the Benches onto some free site, and, post
the link?
And or describe what the Tops are made of, and, how they are attached?

Hey Gang,
We're in the process of buying a new (to us) house with a building in the
back that's going to be turned into my studio.
There are some really great wood built in work benches already in that l
would hate to tear out. The issue I have is it looks like they've been used
by someone working on cars . There's what looks like years of motor oils&
grime soaked into the wood. Not too big of a problem if you're a gear head
but , not good if you're working with clay or making glazes. So I need to
put some type of top on these bad boys.
There's quite a few things we need to do to the house to make it "ours" so =
I
need to keep it as cheap a fix as I can as well.
I will be covering at least two of the tops with canvas but I'll still need
to put something on top of the wood first. I figure I'll need to top the
other benches with something that I can wash with a sponge & water. As if
I wasn't asking for enough already I also meed all this to be as easy to do
as possible. I will probably be doing most of this without my hubby's help
due to his demanding work schedule. Does anyone have any ideas ? If you've
had to deal with a similar situation what did you use ?
Thanks in advance !
Logan
